"Semi-Pro" is a mess, but it's a likable one. This Will Ferrell comedy takes place within the ABA pro basketball league of the 1970s, which gave the sport the multicolored "beach ball," which did not survive, and the three-point shot, which most definitely did.

Fool's Gold

A soggy, listless affair, this would-be fun-in-the-sun sunken-treasure frivolity starts taking on water from the get-go, thanks to drawn-out exposition and languid pacing.

City of Men

A spin-off of the Brazilian television series that was itself derived from Fernando Meirelles' 2002 art house hit "City of God," this film directed by longtime Meirelles collaborator Paulo Morelli similarly explores the sex- and violence-drenched lives of those living in the slums, or favelas, of Rio de Janeiro.

Heart of Fire

BERLIN -- In his revelatory "The Story of the Weeping Camel," Luigi Falorni, who co-directed that film, established himself as an artist who can beautifully smudge the line between documentary and feature filmmaking. He continues in this vein with the no less impressive "Heart of Fire," a story about children turned into soldiers during Eritrea's long, turbulent war of independence from Ethiopia.
